How Do I Keep My Dog from Digging in the Yard?

ANSWER: Dogs that dig will almost always dig! It is almost impossible to make them stop. The only thing you can do is redirect the digging to an area that will minimize the damage.

The most common thing done, is to set up a sandbox: Remember that digging is a natural tendency for dogs. So, if you provide a place where your dog is allowed to dig, you should be able to quickly get the dog to dig there. Simply encouraging the dog to dig by placing toys and treats in the sand. (and only in the sand). Place the sand box in an area that is cool in summer and warm in winter.

To teach the dog to dig only in the box, place or bury toys or treats (sliced hotdogs, for example) in the box. Encourage the dog to dig up the toy or treat. Praise the dog for finding the treats. Repeat this training until the dog willingly does it on it's own. Be sure to watch the dog. If it starts to dig in any other place, quickly stop it and take your dog back to it's sand box. Show it (by digging yourself), that it should dig in its box.
